Install Typst

Typst is a free, open-source program that turns text files into PDFs. It's one small download.

  1. Think of Typst as a much simpler, much faster cousin of LaTeX (the tool scientists write papers in). You write a text file, run one command, and get a PDF. Because the design lives in a template, it can't get nudged out of place the way a Word invoice does.

    Windows
    winget install --id Typst.Typst -e
    Mac (with Homebrew)
    brew install typst
Linux (Ubuntu and other snap systems)
    sudo snap install typst
  2. On other Linux systems, use your package manager (Repology lists them ↗) or download the Linux archive from the Typst releases page ↗.

  3. On Windows, winget downloads a 22MB zip from Typst's official GitHub releases and unpacks it into your user folder (about 50MB). It takes a few seconds and doesn't ask for admin rights:

    Output
    Found Typst [Typst.Typst] Version 0.15.1
    ...
    Successfully verified installer hash
    Extracting archive...
    Successfully extracted archive
    Starting package install...
Path environment variable modified; restart your shell to use the new value.
    Command line alias added: "typst"
    Successfully installed
  4. Close the terminal, open a new one, and check it's there:

    Terminal
    typst --version
    Output
    typst 0.15.1 (9dfd3a08)
TipThere's also a free online editor at typst.app ↗, but it needs an account (and has a paid Pro plan). Everything in this mission runs on your own machine, offline, with no account.

The install changed your PATH, but only new windows see it (winget even says "restart your shell"). Close every terminal window and open a fresh one.

Update App Installer from the Microsoft Store and try again. Or download typst-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip from the Typst releases page ↗, unzip it, copy typst.exe into your templates folder (next step) and type .\typst instead of typst.
