Remix a film made entirely of code, and post it as a Reel
Window Seat, Roost and the other risograph films from our reels are each one HTML file: no video, no images, just code that draws every frame. Change the colours and the fireworks, then export your version as a vertical Reel with sound.
- Level 0 done: Git and Node.js installed
- FFmpeg for the last step (see Shrink, trim and reformat any video)
- About 1.6GB of disk space (the repo, plus the browsers the export tools use)
- A text editor. Notepad works; VS Code is nicer
Download the films and press play
See what a film made only of code looks like, with nothing installed but Git.
These commands work the same in PowerShell, Terminal on a Mac and a Linux shell:
Terminalcd $HOME/Downloads git clone https://github.com/sevenevesai/riso-windowseat cd riso-windowseatThe download is about 93MB. Now open your file manager, go to
riso-windowseat/films/window-seatand double-click index.html. It opens in your browser, offline.
Window Seat at 26 seconds. Everything you see, including the halftone dots, is drawn by code in that one file. - Play and the slider: watch or scrub through the 78 seconds
- Sound: off: click it to switch the piano score on (it takes a few seconds to prepare)
- Try the other folders in
films: roost (starlings), held (a kite), nonpareil (paper marbling), eclosion (a butterfly) and more
TipThe live player draws every frame in real time, so on a laptop without a graphics card it can stutter (around 9 frames a second). The film itself is fine: step 5 exports it frame by frame, perfectly smooth.
