Send a 2GB video without WeTransfer, using a three-word code

Videos too big for email or WhatsApp, a whole folder of photos: croc sends them straight to another computer, end-to-end encrypted. The other person opens a link, with nothing to install. No account, nothing parked in the cloud, and it resumes if the connection drops.

Get croc (no installer)

croc is one small program. The sender needs it. The receiver needs it too, or just a browser (step 3).

  1. The easiest way on Windows is Scoop ↗, a free installer that needs no admin rights:

    Windows (Scoop)
    scoop install croc
    Output
Installing 'croc' (11.5.4) [64bit] from 'main' bucket
    Downloading https://github.com/schollz/croc/releases/download/v11.5.4/croc_v11.5.4_Windows-64bit.zip (8.6 MB)...
    Checking hash of croc_v11.5.4_Windows-64bit.zip... OK.
    ...
    'croc' (11.5.4) was installed successfully!
  2. No Scoop? Download the zip from the official releases page ↗ yourself. These lines fetch and unpack it into a croc folder in your user folder (change 11.5.4 if there's a newer one):

    Windows (official zip)
    cd $HOME
    Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://github.com/schollz/croc/releases/download/v11.5.4/croc_v11.5.4_Windows-64bit.zip" -OutFile croc.zip
    Expand-Archive croc.zip -DestinationPath $HOME\croc
    Set-Alias croc "$HOME\croc\croc.exe"
  3. Check it works:

    Terminal
    croc --version
    Output
    croc version 11.5.4
    Mac (Homebrew)
    brew install croc
Linux (or Arch: pacman -S croc)
    curl https://getcroc.com | bash
TipThe zip route's Set-Alias line only lasts until you close the window. Paste it again in each new PowerShell. Scoop doesn't need it.

Open a new PowerShell window after installing with Scoop. With the zip, run the Set-Alias line again in this window.
