Aider
An AI pair programmer that runs in your terminal: describe a change in plain English and it edits the files in your project and saves each change as a git commit you can undo.
What you can do with it
- Fix a bug from a plain-English description or an error message
- Add a small feature that touches several files
- Ask questions about code you didn't write without changing it
Worth knowingWith a small free local model it is slow (1 to 2.5 minutes per change on our 16GB laptop) and makes mistakes: in our tests one change crashed when used, one forgot a file, and one correct fix was silently thrown away. Aider's docs say it works best with big cloud models, which need an API key and usually cost money per request (we did not test those).
